The Best Icon Resources for Web Designers

By April 27, 2014 No Comments

High quality icons can make a huge difference in your web design. There are countless websites where you can find icons online, but I’m going to give you the top three resources that I use.

1. Font Awesome

Appropriately named, these icons really are awesome. And it’s a font, which means you don’t have to deal with uploading images. Font Awesome gives you hundreds of scalable vector icons that can instantly be customized — size, color, drop shadow, and anything that can be done with the power of CSS. They look perfect at any size, even on retina displays. And the best part, it’s 100% free for commercial use.

To use it, just paste the following code in the head section of your site’s html.

<link href="//netdna.bootstrapcdn.com/font-awesome/4.0.3/css/font-awesome.css" rel="stylesheet">

Then all you have to do is add the specific icon codes wherever you want to use them on your site. You can find some examples here. For a full list of icons, click here.

2. Iconfinder

This is one of my favorite resources. Iconfinder provides beautiful icons to millions of designers, developers and other creative professionals. They host the worlds largest collection of premium icons, with over 340,000 icons in stock.

If you’re looking for free icons, they have a helpful filtering system which you can use to sort by price and license.

3. Flaticon

The largest database of free vector icons. Includes a powerful search engine, a free Photoshop plugin, plus you can use all of their icons as webfonts.

They also have a large selection of icon packs that cover a wide range of categories for any specific situation you may need.

Many of their icons require that you provide a link back to the author, so be sure to check the license and include the necessary credits.
